I am genuinely upset to be writing this negative review. I studied at the University of Manchester a few years ago and used to frequent the Vnam stall that was at Uni Place. I have fond memories and recall the tasty food and lovely staff who were always so kind and friendly- I never had a chance to stay goodbye as COVID forced everything to shut so suddenly and I soon moved away.I was visiting Manchester yesterday so made sure to visit Vnam, hoping to relive the taste of my uni memories. Sadly I was met with sore disappointment and one of the most comically poor restaurant experiences I have ever had in the UK.To start with, the chopsticks provided at the table were all filthy and sticky (as pictured). I flagged this to the staff who then brought out knives, forks, and western spoons as a replacement- even though I ordered pho. Once my pho arrived, a piece of paper with my order number was stuck to the inside of my bowl. The beef also looked fully cooked through, not the semi-rare beef you would typically expect. The real disappointment hit me when I tasted the pho, which was very bland despite requesting extra chillis. I asked a waiter for additional fresh chillis, a request that was met with confusion. The waiter seemed to not understand why I was asking for fresh chilli and not chilli oil/sauce, which is odd as fresh chilli is a normal topping for pho. He explained that the restaurant only had the big massive chillis, which I interpreted as you only having the large, mild chillis as opposed to the standard bird’s eye chilli- disappointing, but passable. However, he then proceeded to hand me a singular whole, entire chilli that was not cut up. I reacted in disbelief as frankly, I have ordered pho and requested additional fresh chilli at countless Vietnamese restaurants across the UK, ranging from the truly authentic to more fusion style, but never have I been given something as comically ridiculous as a whole, uncut chilli.Based on my experience today, I can only assume there must have been a significant change in ownership or management. It baffles me to see that the staff working here seem to have no understanding of the cuisine that they are supposedly serving. I honestly do not think it is appropriate to continue advertising your restaurant as authentic on your social media after all these changes. The only redeeming factors were the decent decor and music. It truly saddens me to see that a restaurant that was once so special has somehow been reduced to a shell of what it used to be.

We came to the new restaurant opening yesterday and I will start by saying the food was delicious as always! We used to go to the old restaurant and couldn’t wait to come again at the new location. The staff were all really nice and the decorations are ace. Unfortunately the new ordering system let them down and food service was slow but we completely understand teething problems and the staff were great at accommodating to us. This definitely did not put us off as the food was top notch, definitely still the best Vietnamese food I have had in Manchester!!! We will be back very soon :)

This place was banging! Lovely and quick service, delicious food and a vegan menu nearly as big as the regular menu. Some of the best vegan meat substitutes I’ve had in the city. If you already order from Wawin, you know the ones (they use the same ones here). We had the vegan beef and chicken pho and it was so tasty. Came with a plate of fresh onion coriander chilli lime and soy sprouts.Vegetarian options: Large vegan menu that states when dishes are gluten free but you have to ask for other allergens I think
